We are deciding how this product will live, breathe, and evolve for the next five years. Most developers open a new project and immediately start creating screens.
Buttons. Forms. Navigation stacks.
We won’t.
Because
- This is not a demo app.
- This is not a hackathon submission.
- This is not something we build to “just make it work.”
- This is a product.

And when you work in any organisation — whether you are a junior developer or a tech lead — you must take ownership of the product as if it belongs to you.
Not 60%.
Not 80%.
100%.
Think of your product like your child.
- You don’t rush a child into the world without preparing.
- You don’t ignore the foundation and hope growth happens magically.
- You nurture. You protect. You think long-term. Right ?
You ask: How will this grow? What environment does it need?
Architecture is that environment for your product. Features are just clothes.
Products are not built with excitement alone.
They are built with responsibility. And responsibility begins with architecture.
The Product We Are Building
We are building Offline Life Archive.
A private, offline-first memory vault.
Not social.
Not cloud-first.
Not productivity.
Not a journaling gimmick.
Just this:
Your private digital life. Stored locally. Owned by you.
Before writing a single line of feature code, we defined:
- Who it is for
- What problem it solves
- What it will NOT include
- MVP boundaries
- Emotional anchor
Architecture must serve that clarity.
Not ego.
Not trends.
Why Architecture on Day One?
Because:
- Architecture determines how fast you move later.
- Architecture decides whether refactoring will destroy you.
- Architecture defines whether you build features… or systems.
Most apps die in month 6 — not because of features, but because of messy foundations.
We are building differently.
The Philosophy: Build Small. Design Big.
We are building an MVP.
But we are designing for extraction.
This app is not just an app.
It is:
- A privacy product
- A case study
- The foundation of something larger (Production OS)
So the question today is not:
“How do we build the timeline screen?”
It is:
“How do we ensure the timeline screen never pollutes our business logic?”
That’s architecture thinking.
The 5-Layer Architecture Model
We are using a strict layered model:
App Layer
Module Layer
Core Layer
Shared Layer
Data Layer
Let’s break that down.
App Layer
Navigation and global orchestration only.
Module Layer
Feature-level business logic (archive, tagging, sharing, settings).
Core Layer
Infrastructure:
- Encryption
- Secure storage
- Filesystem
- Config
- Devtools
Shared Layer
Reusable, presentational UI components only.
Data Layer
Encrypted Realm database.
Each layer has boundaries.
No cross-contamination.
If layers bleed into each other, refactoring becomes inevitable.
Folder Structure (Production-Ready From Day One)
We created a structure that supports growth:
src/
app/
core/
modules/
shared/
This is not over-engineering.
This is prevention.
Most MVPs collapse because everything lives inside screens/.
We are separating:
- Infrastructure from features
- Business logic from UI
- Storage from services
- Reusable systems from product modules
Strict Architectural Rules (Non-Negotiable)
From today onward:
- No business logic inside UI components.
- No direct Realm calls inside screens.
- Repository layer handles database access.
- Services handle business logic.
- Encryption lives only inside
core/security. - File handling lives only inside
core/fileSystem. - Modules never depend directly on other modules.
- No hardcoded theme values in UI.
These rules are boring.
And that’s the point.
Boring architecture scales.
Why We Are NOT Using Redux (Yet)
This is important.
We are not using:
- Redux
- Zustand
- MobX
- Any global state tool
Why?
Because:
- Realm is the single source of truth.
- UI subscribes through custom hooks.
- Derived state only.
- No duplicated global state.
Premature abstraction is forbidden.
Complexity must be earned.
Security From Day One
Most MVPs say:
“We’ll add encryption later.”
We won’t.
From Day 1:
- Realm database is encrypted.
- Encryption key is generated per installation.
- Key stored securely (Keychain / Keystore).
- PIN stored as hash (never plain text).
- App lock is an overlay — not a navigation route.
- Encryption and lock are separate layers.
Data protection ≠ session protection.
This is infrastructure, not a feature.
Sharing Without Cloud
We are not building servers.
Sharing will be:
- File-based
- Encrypted bundle
- Password protected
- OS share sheet
No backend.
No P2P.
No link sharing.
Local-first means local-first.
Theme System From Day One
We are implementing:
- Central ThemeProvider
- Light / Dark / System
- No hardcoded colors
- Design tokens early
Why?
Because design refactors are expensive.
Calm Scandinavian minimalism is intentional.
UI must remain replaceable.
The Extraction Vision
Everything inside:
core/
shared/
Must be reusable in future products.
Offline Life Archive is:
- A product
- A teaching system
- A foundation
We are not just shipping features.
We are building infrastructure that can be extracted.
This is how you think as a product owner.
What We Did Today (Friday – Day 1)
Today we:
- Finalized product boundaries
- Locked MVP scope
- Defined architecture philosophy
- Created layered folder structure
- Defined strict coding rules
- Chose state strategy
- Chose encryption strategy
- Defined extraction principles
We did not write features.
And that is discipline.
What We Did NOT Do
We did not:
- Add AI
- Add cloud sync
- Add global state libraries
- Add 20 dependencies
- Add theme toggles in UI
- Start designing 10 screens
Restraint is maturity.
Why This Matters
Without structure:
You build features.
With structure:
You build systems.
Without discipline:
You refactor in 6 months.
With discipline:
You extract a product.
What Happens Next?
Today is Friday.
Day 2 will be updated on Monday.
On Day 2 we will:
- Implement encrypted Realm setup
- Establish Core layer foundation
- Create first repository
- Wire infrastructure before UI
- Ensure database encryption actually works
We are building like serious engineers.
